Pima Canyon Morning - 11" x 15" - oil - $1400.

This was painted early in the morning off of Christy Road near Ina.  There is a small path that goes through the wash near Pima Canyon and up to a large flat clearing that has great views of the Catalina Mountains, mainly Pima Canyon, as well as groups of palo verde and saguaros. The early morning, nearly winter, light really turns the mountains a strong blue in the shadows which is a nice foil to the warmer trees in the foreground. The wash is also very interesting and leads into the canyon. I haven’t ventured there yet, that’s my next outdoor piece.

Picture Rocks Canyon - 10" x 10 - oil - $1000.

This canyon is located in the Saguaro West National Park, it winds around for a couple of miles and leads you to a large wall of petroglyphs that are pretty amazing.  This view is early in the morning in late November so the sun stayed pretty low all morning which is nice because in the summer the sun is straight over head by10 a.m. and flattens out the view.  Aside from the light being better, winter gives you more variety in the grass color as well as temperatures below 100.  Because of the low back lighting I had a lot of contrast to deal with as well as a hard time seeing into the shadows to find the local color.  The edges in this area have beautiful contrasts between the soft shrubbery and the very chiseled, hard edged rock.  This was early October, the colors were just starting to turn giving me more variety in color.

Cottonwods - oil - 12" x 12" - $1100. unframed

These trees were painted nearCottonwood Falls, KS in the Flint Hills.  It was around noon so the light was almost over head which flattens out the shapes, so this backlit view gives me more contrast and drama.

The shadows and the fallen trees gave me some horizontal lines to break up the strong verticals of the trees.

Farm Near Cottonwood, KS - oil - 10" x 12" - $1050. - unframed

This small farm is located in the heart of the Flint Hills of Kansas. I was looking for something other than the rolling panoramic views so common in the Flint Hills and this group of barns with the dappled light made a great composition. It was very early in the morning and there was no one around to ask permission to set up and paint, usually dogs will announce my arrival but they must have been out roaming the country side.  You may click on the picture to enlarge it.
